The connection between sun protection and anti-aging care
How many steps does your evening facial care routine include? Cleansing, toning, serum, retinol, rich night cream. We invest a lot of time and money in anti-age cosmetics with promises of a younger-looking appearance, but if we skip one step in the morning, the result of all that care literally disappears under the influence of the sun’s rays.
Dermatological studies show that up to 80-90% of the visible signs of skin aging are not due to genetics, but to solar radiation. This process is called photoaging and is the reason why sunscreen is the most important anti-age step you have available every day.
What exactly is photoaging and how does the sun damage the skin?
Photoaging is premature aging of the skin caused by exposure to UV rays, unlike chronological aging, which is genetically predetermined and occurs slowly. It affects the face, neck and décolleté earlier and more visibly than the natural process of cellular aging.
The main cause is the effect of UVA and UVB rays, which differ in wavelength and in the way they attack the skin. UVB rays penetrate the upper layer of the skin, the epidermis, and mainly cause redness. The longer waves reach deeper, into the dermis, and remain active all year round, including in cloudy weather and through window glass.
The difference between the two types of rays explains why the label for broad-spectrum protection is so important on every sunscreen product. A product that blocks only UVB rays will protect against redness, but will leave the skin completely vulnerable to the deep damage that causes real aging.
The breakdown of collagen and elastin
When UVA rays reach the dermis, they provoke the formation of free radicals, unstable molecules that cause oxidative stress in the cells. This stress activates enzymes called metalloproteinases, which break down two key proteins, collagen and elastin, responsible for the firmness, density and elasticity of the face.
The result is a gradual loss of support in the tissues, sagging of the facial oval and earlier appearance of fine lines and deep wrinkles. Antioxidants (vitamin C, E) neutralize some of them and support protection from within, but they cannot replace the physical barrier provided by SPF filters from the outside. That is why a good anti-age routine combines both - antioxidant care at night and sunscreen in the morning.
A study by the U.S. National Institutes of Health, published in PMC, shows that metalloproteinases activated by UV radiation break down up to three times more collagen in just 24 hours compared to unprotected skin. This explains why the lack of protection accumulates quickly and is difficult to compensate for afterwards.

Hyperpigmentation and uneven complexion
Hyperpigmentation is a protective reaction of the skin to UV damage. In response to radiation, the skin produces melanin more intensively to protect itself, thus creating a natural tan. Over time, however, this process becomes disrupted in certain areas and melanin accumulates unevenly, leading to dark spots known as solar lentigo.
These pigment spots often visually age the face even more than wrinkles themselves, because they disrupt the overall uniformity of the complexion. Sunscreen with high SPF filters and protection against both types of rays prevents the appearance of new pigment spots, while brightening ingredients in cosmetics help fade existing ones over time.
The connection between sun protection and active anti-age ingredients
Many people believe that sunscreen products simply protect the skin from burning at the beach. In reality, they are the condition without which the rest of your cosmetics cannot work effectively.
Most powerful anti-age ingredients, such as retinol, glycolic acid and vitamin C, accelerate the renewal of skin cells. This makes the new, thinner skin extremely sensitive to the sun’s rays. If you use retinol in the evening and skip sunscreen with a high factor the next morning, you risk pigmentation and irritation.
In addition, it is much easier and cheaper to prevent collagen breakdown than to try to stimulate it again with procedures and serums. Sun protection is the number one preventive anti-age care, not an extra step that can be skipped on a missed day. Daily application of sun protection factor protects the results you have paid for in the rest of your routine.

How to choose the right product for mature skin?
Facial sunscreens today offer much more than basic protection. For daily use on the face, you need a product that not only provides protection, but also actively cares for the needs of mature skin: to hydrate, neutralize oxidative stress and have a light texture that does not clog pores and sits well under makeup.
The choice also depends on skin sensitivity. Chemical formulas offer a light, fast-absorbing texture, while gentle formulas with mineral filters are more suitable for very sensitive or reactive skin types.
Sunscreen products are also available on the market in the form of fluid, spray or stick, but for daily anti-age care on the face, the creamy texture remains the most convenient for application under makeup.
The SPF for face category by Sunlike offers products tailored exactly to these needs. An example of a hybrid formula is the ANTI-AGE Face Sunscreen Cream with SPF 50, which offers:
- Very high broad-spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays;
- A complex of ceramides and hyaluronic acid, which hydrate and nourish the skin and improve the feeling of elasticity;
- A light, non-sticky and fast-absorbing texture in a convenient airless package, a perfect base for daily makeup;
- Suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin;
For skin that reacts more strongly to chemical ingredients, the range also includes a face sunscreen cream with 100% mineral filters based on zinc oxide, with 95% natural composition and the same light, non-sticky texture.
Indicator | ANTI-AGE Cream | Cream with mineral filter |
SPF | 50 | 50 |
Formula | With ceramides and hyaluronic complex | 100% mineral filter |
Skin type | All, incl. sensitive | All, incl. reactive |
Texture | Light, fast-absorbing | Light, non-sticky |
Packaging | Airless, 50 ml | Airless, 50 ml |
Special focus | Anti-age care | 95% natural composition |
Do not forget the lips, neck and décolleté. Lips with such thin skin have almost no natural protection, while the neck and décolleté are the areas that first reveal age. For hard-to-reach areas, a compact sunscreen stick for the body and face is a convenient solution, and a spray is a practical choice for refreshing protection during the day.
Practical rules for maximum anti-age effect
To get the most out of your sunscreens, follow a few golden rules. The two-finger rule states that in order to achieve the actual sun protection factor written on the packaging, you need to apply a sufficient amount, approximately as much as two straight lines of cream squeezed along the index and middle finger, for the face and neck.
Sun protection is mandatory 365 days a year, not a seasonal product only for the beach. Clouds block only about 20% of UV rays, while snow, water and asphalt reflect them and further intensify their effect. That is why sunscreen is a mandatory step in winter and on rainy autumn days as well, not only in summer.
According to the World Health Organization, sun protection is recommended whenever the solar radiation index reaches a value of 3 or more. In Bulgaria, these thresholds are exceeded in the lowlands from early spring to late autumn, while in mountain areas the levels remain high all year round due to the thinner atmospheric layer. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends daily use of a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a factor of at least 30, regardless of the season.
The investment in expensive anti-wrinkle serums and creams loses its meaning if the skin is not protected from its biggest enemy, UV radiation. Sunscreen is not a seasonal beach accessory, but the most important step in your daily anti-age routine. Choose anti-age care with a proven factor and apply it every morning as the last step before makeup.
Your skin will thank you, although not immediately – the results of sun protection are visible in the long term. With every day of consistent protection from the sun’s rays, it remains free from new pigment spots for longer and preserves its density, tone and radiance, without having to compensate for what was missed later.
Summary:
- Up to 80-90% of the visible signs of aging are due to photoaging, not genetics.
- UVA and UVB rays act differently – UVB damages the surface, while the deeper rays break down collagen and elastin.
- Oxidative stress and uneven pigmentation are a direct result of the lack of sufficient protection.
- Double UV protection and hydration are mandatory for the result from retinol and acids.
- Sunscreen with SPF 50 is the foundation of every anti-age routine, 365 days a year.
