UVA and UVB rays - what's the difference and why they're important for the skin

Sunlight is vital, but its spectrum contains invisible forces that can dramatically alter the state of our bodies. In this article, we will take a closer look at the main types of ultraviolet rays invisible to the human eye – UVA, UVB and UVC, to understand how each of them affects cells.

What are UV rays and how do they reach us?

The sun is a source of energy that emits electromagnetic radiation in a wide range. Ultraviolet rays are a part of this spectrum that remains invisible to the human eye, but have a powerful biological effect on living matter. When we talk about UV radiation, we should know that it is partially filtered by the atmosphere. However, a significant amount reaches the Earth's surface, where it interacts directly with our organs.


Exposure to UV rays is inevitable, even on cloudy days or in winter, as UV radiation is active year-round. It is important to understand that UV radiation is not uniform; it consists of photons with different energies. This determines how deeply the rays will penetrate tissues and what chemical reactions they will cause in DNA structures - a major risk factor for the development of skin cancer.


What is the difference between UVA and UVB rays according to their wavelength?

The difference between UVA and other rays lies in their length. UVA rays have a longer wavelength than other types of UV rays, between 320 and 400 nm (nanometers). This physical characteristic allows them to pass through glass, clouds, and even thinner clothing with ease. On the other hand, UVB rays have a longer wavelength (280-320 nm) and carry much more energy at the surface level.


The wavelength largely determines the effect on the skin. Radiation with a shorter wavelength is more aggressive to the surface. Longer wavelengths penetrate much deeper and are therefore more insidious to the dermis.





What are UVA rays and how do they work?

UVA rays make up about 95% of the ultraviolet light that reaches us. They have a constant intensity throughout the daylight hours and in all seasons. Unlike other types of ultraviolet rays, the intensity of UVA is not significantly affected by the time of day. This makes them a major factor in skin aging, as we often do not feel their effects in the form of heat or immediate redness. This radiation is responsible for immediate darkening, as it stimulates the oxidation of melanin present in the cells.


Penetration into the deep layers of the skin

Unlike UVB, which stops at the surface, UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin, reaching the dermis – the layer where collagen and elastin are found. There, they attack fibroblasts, which is a direct cause of wrinkles and loss of elasticity. This process is known as photoaging. When UVA rays penetrate this deep, they generate free radicals that permanently damage cell membranes.


This is why prolonged sun exposure without specialized UVA protection leads to massive oxidative stress and protein breakdown. It is an invisible threat that does not cause an immediate reaction, but visibly increases the imprint of time on our skin.


Relationship with aging

The result of these changes deep within the skin is premature aging, which manifests itself in loss of tone, sagging skin, and the appearance of age spots. Therefore, good facial skin protection from UV rays must necessarily include filters against the UVA spectrum. What are UVB rays and when is their intensity highest?

UVB rays are the ones we most often associate with hot summer days. They have a shorter wavelength than UVA, but are significantly more energetic and aggressive to the surface of the skin. It is important to know that UVB rays are strongest between 10:00 and 16:00. Unlike type A, they do not pass through ordinary glass, and their access to the surface is strongly influenced by the state of the ozone layer, altitude and latitude.


Although they make up a smaller percentage of total UV radiation, their harmful effects are visible almost immediately. Since this radiation carries a huge energy charge, excessive exposure to its power can quickly lead to cell death in the epidermis. For this reason, reliable protection with a high SPF is a must, especially during the hours of greatest solar activity.


Why are UVB rays the main cause of redness and burns?

These rays are the main culprits of painful redness and classic sunburn. Although they stimulate the production of new melanin (the skin's protective reaction), their energy capacity often exceeds the body's ability to protect itself. When exposed directly, UVB rays can be a serious aggressor on the epidermis, and the first clear signal of danger is pain, burning and subsequent peeling of the skin.


If the cells' defense mechanisms are overwhelmed, the result is acute inflammation. Therefore, it is critical not to rely solely on natural tanning, but to provide a barrier to prevent these superficial but painful damages.


Risk of damage and skin cancer

Beyond redness, the main risk of UVB radiation is the destruction of DNA bonds in the surface layers of the skin. Mutations accumulated over the years can cause serious pathological changes and even lead to skin cancer, including its most aggressive form – melanoma. Scientific data is categorical: the development of malignant tumors is directly related to the frequency and intensity of burns suffered throughout life.


The skin tries to protect itself from UVB by thickening (hyperkeratosis), but this is only a temporary and insufficient barrier. Regular application of a product with a high protection factor is today the gold standard for the prevention of malignant skin changes and for the long-term health of the body. It is the only sure way to avoid the risk of permanent cellular damage and premature aging of the skin.


What is UVC radiation and why is the ozone layer our shield?

There is another variation in the UV spectrum - UVC rays. UVC have the shortest wavelength and the highest radiation energy. They are also the most deadly. Fortunately for us, UVC rays are almost completely absorbed by the ozone layer on Earth. If the protection of the ozone layer were compromised, UVC would make life on the surface impossible.


UVC rays are used in medicine and industry for sterilization. However, they do not reach us through sunlight and are therefore irrelevant to skin care. The focus remains on UVA and UVB rays, as they are the ones that accelerate skin aging and cellular changes.


How does the sun affect the immune system and vitamin D production?

The effects of UV radiation are not necessarily bad. Controlled exposure to UVB is essential for the synthesis of vitamin D in the body. This process is crucial for bone health and the proper functioning of the immune system. It is triggered when UVB photons interact with skin cells. Typically, short periods of 15 minutes are enough for the process to take place.


On the other hand, if you are exposed for too long without protection, it can lead to local suppression of the immune response in the skin. Balance is of paramount importance: our body needs the sun's energy to produce vitamin D, but at the same time, excessive sun exposure must be avoided to avoid immune deficiency or skin diseases.




Can UV rays be used for medical purposes?

In controlled laboratory conditions, ultraviolet light has become a powerful healing tool. Specific wavelengths of UVB have been successfully used to treat skin conditions such as psoriasis, vitiligo, and various forms of dermatitis. This therapy, called phototherapy, uses radiation to regulate cell division.


The medical application of rays proves how complex their influence is. When used by specialists, they solve serious skin problems, but with uncontrolled exposure they pose a risk of serious skin damage. This emphasizes the need to know the different types of radiation and not expose our bodies to risk without an appropriate sun protection factor.


Why is broad-spectrum protection important?

Maximum skin safety depends on “broad spectrum” protection. This is critical because many consumers are misled by the high SPF factor alone. However, it is a unit of measurement for protection against UVB rays only. If there is no specific UVA filter, the skin remains vulnerable to this part of the spectrum.


Combining modern photostable filters with antioxidants (such as vitamin C, E or niacinamide) is equally important, as these antioxidant ingredients neutralize free radicals generated even with minimal exposure. Effective protection of facial skin from UV rays requires a product that works both on the surface and in the dermis.
