For lovers of travel and seaside holidays, intense solar energy is a source of health and good mood, but it is also the factor that determines when our skin is at greatest risk. Understanding the cycle of solar energy in Bulgaria is key for anyone who wants to enjoy its beneficial influence without compromising their health.

When is the UV index highest and solar energy most dangerous?

Naturally, in July and August, when the sun is at its zenith, the UV index is highest. It also increases proportionally with altitude. However, remember that the intensity of sunlight is not the same throughout the day. The sun's energy carries the greatest risk of burning between 11:00 and 16:00.


It is interesting to note that our skin reacts to these rays in a similar way to photovoltaic panels – it absorbs the energy, but when overloaded, the “system” is damaged. While modern power plants use this power for beneficial purposes, it can be destructive to our skin if we do not use the right sunscreen.


Even when the sun seems mild, the amount of radiation our body receives can exceed its maximum self-healing capacity. That's why organizations like the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency in the US) advise using protection at a UV index above 2. In other words, sun protection is necessary practically all year round, especially if you like to ski or just walk in the mountains.

The important influence of sunlight on health is undeniable, especially when it comes to the natural synthesis of vitamin D. The average annual duration of light in our country is extremely favorable.


A surprising fact for most people is that to use the sun's rays for health, we don't have to spend the whole day on the beach. Most people's bodies manage to produce the necessary levels of the "sunshine vitamin" in a surprisingly short time. Not all mountains in Bulgaria are the same in terms of solar activity. In Rila and Pirin, located in the southwestern region, the average duration of sunshine is longer than in the central or eastern Balkans, for example.
